At Oz Wide trailers we pride ourselves on making a variety of trailers for Aussies all the way from Brisbane to Perth. People use their trailers for a variety of different reason. Some need it to carry loads for work, others need it to do odd jobs around the house and some just want to be able to tow their toys around on the weekend. For this last group we have created a versatile motorbike trailer that can get all your bikes (or buggy’s) out on to the tracks, letting you enjoy the time on the trails easier and for longer. We have compiled this list of motorbike trailer tips on how to make the most of your motorbike trailer and get out on the trails safely.
When you are heading out to enjoy a ride the last thing you want is a mishap or accident that stops you from getting to the destination. The first of our motorbike trailer tips, how to secure your bike so that you can get out there and enjoy riding safely. A motorbike tied down incorrectly to your trailer could result in your motorcycle shifting or tipping over during a trip down the highway, or even falling out of your trailer. Get some ratchet straps. There are several varieties of these straps but the ratchet type is easier to compress the suspension than the pull strap type, and they are available at any good hardware store. Bikes can be more awkward to secure than other loads as they have a more awkward shape, using ratchet straps effectively will make sure your bikes are properly secure. Put the side stand down and attach the straps. A general rule for strapping anything is to attach the straps as high as possible on the bike and as low as possible on the trailer for the greatest holding power. Use an “X” pattern for maximum stability. Make sure the suspension is compressed. As you ratchet the straps down, you need to make sure the suspension is compressed fully. If it is not compressed it is possible that your straps can come loose as the bike rebounds, bouncing around from bumps and dips in the road. Strap the rear of the bike. Remember to secure the straps rearward of the motorcycle so that the rear straps put counter tension on the front straps, making your bike an immovable fixture on the trailer. An Oz Wide motorbike trailer has tire guards to securely hold your bike. This makes the process of securing incredibly easy and safe.
Another important motorbike trailer tip, practice driving around with the trailer attached to your main vehicle. You don’t want the first time you drive with a trailer to be the first time you’ve got your prized bike strapped to it, driving at highway speeds in the elements. A motorbike trailer can weigh quite a bit less than a regular trailer so it is important to understand the differences in manoeuvrability. Practice hooking up your trailer and driving around a bit to get a feel for things. Practice tight corners, driveways, and backing up specifically. Take it for a test run on a highway, at high speed. Get a sense of how you will need to adjust your regular driving habits to accommodate driving with the trailer attached. With less weight there comes less stability, you need to make sure you are taking corners smooth to avoid sliding. To keep your motorcycle tied down safely on a trailer during road trips, learn the correct procedures. Learn to pick an appropriate trailer, secure your bike to it, and drive safely.
